Sohn des Kaufmanns Löbel P., wird selbst für den Handelsberuf erzogen, doch die Lektüre N.-H. Wesselys und ein „poetischer Rausch“ der Freiheitskriege motivieren ihn seit 1814 zum Studium. Seit 1819 tritt er in Breslau als Redner an die Öffentlichkeit, wobei er sich der rhetor. Formen christlicher Predigt bedient und deswegen dem allgemeinen Verbot innerjüdischer Neuerungen durch die preußische Regierung anheimfällt. 1823 Lehrer u. Prediger in Twardogóra (Festenberg), Mittelschlesien Akiba Eger begrüßt ihn als orthodoxen Prediger in Posen und stützt sich auf ihn 1825-26 bei seiner Kampagne zur Rettung der Jeschiwot. 1830 Lehrer in Berlin, predigt alle zwei Wochen am Bet-Midrasch 1835-38 lehrt er Bibel und Grammatik am Rabbiner- und Lehrerseminar. Nach Konflikten mit den Berliner Reformern 1843 Prediger in Posen. Lehnt 1846 das ihm angebotene Mainzer Rabbinat ab, wie auch andere rb. Anstellungen, um Zeit für seine Studien namentlich über die Apokryphen zu behalten.
