Cultural Work.—The opening of the Daniel Sieff Hall (for which thanks are due to Mr. Israel M. Sieff, a former Grand Commander) has provided a long-needed want in connection with this work, and various forms of cultural and social activities are carried out : in particular, the Hebrew Speaking Classes and Study Circles. In addition to this, Manchester, for the first time, is able to house all Zionist activities. C.—SOCIETIES. CHINA. Mrs. R. E. Toeg, President, and Mr. N. E. B. Ezra, Hon. Secretary, continue to be the most active members in the Shanghai Zionist Association, which held several public meetings during the past two years. Mr. Ezra continues to edit Israel's Messenger, the official organ of the Shanghai Zionist Association, which he founded over thirty-two years ago, and which fulfils an important function as a medium of information and propaganda among all the Jewish communities of the Far and Middle East. Mrs. Toeg visited England in the spring of 1934, and a luncheon was given in her honour by the Executive of the Zionist Organisation, at which a tribute was paid to her and her Zionist fellow-workers in China. Our movement has sustained a severe loss through the death of Mr. David Gubbay, who has always been an enthusiastic supporter of our cause. EGYPT. The Zionist Society in Alexandria decided at its last meeting to take steps to bring about the establishment of a federation of Zionist societies in Egypt, in order to co-ordinate and strengthen the activity of the societies in Alexandria, Cairo and Port Said, and any other societies that may be formed later. It is hoped that the establishment of the new Federation will result in a considerable expansion of our movement in Egypt. INDIA. The principal Zionist centre in this country is Bombay, which has the largest Jewish community. The Bombay Zionist Association has held several public meetings and takes part in the work for the Keren Hayesod and Keren Kayemeth. The city was visited during the period of this report by Dr. B. Shein in 1934 and by Mr. Ittamar Ben-Avi in the spring of 1935 : the latter addressed some meetings in aid of the Keren Kayemeth. * Mr. Ben Sargon returned to Bombay in 1934 after paying a visit to Palestine, and gave a radio talk on his impressions of the country, as well as some public lectures, which should be of great value to our cause. 255
