other countries, such as Hungary, Bulgaria, and Jugoslavia, the scope of work is forcibly restricted. This state of affairs affects not only the fortunes of the Zionist-Socialist Party but also the whole Zionist movement.! Since the 18th Zionist Congress new groups have been I constituted in several countries. Special mention must be made of , the group in Holland, which has made considerable progress. That / group succeeded in winning over to its colours both Jewish workers and intellectuals, who had been for many years in the ranks of S the local Socialist Party. New groups have also been formed in Hungary and Transylvania; and the group in Greece, which had ] been inactive for a considerable period, has now been reorganised / and has resumed its activities. In the course of the last two years three meetings of the Party Council have been held. The first took place in April, 1934, in Palestine, and discussed chiefly the position of the movement throughout the world; the second in September, 1934, in Warsaw, dealing with the general position in the Zionist movement and the attitude of the Party to the convening of a Jewish World Congress; and the third in December, 1934, also in Warsaw, its agenda including inter alia the agreement between the Zionist Organisation and the Revisionists and between the Histadruth Haovdim and the Revisionists. The Council was attended by representatives of Parties affiliated to the I hud. During the period under review the Party has developed - considerable propaganda activity. The members of the Head Office paid visits to almost all countries in Europe where there are Ihud groups. Similarly the United States and Canada were visited by leading members of the Party. Apart from verbal propaganda, the Head Office published two pamphlets relating to the problems of the united Party. There are at the disposal of the Party two daily papers (in Poland and Lithuania) and ten weekly and monthly periodicals in seven languages. National groups are affiliated to the Union of the Poale-Zion and Hitachduth in the following countries : 1. Poland. Since the last Congress the Party in Poland has experienced a further considerable development, and an accretion of power and influence. It has evolved into a popular Party, which has decisive influence on the Jewish working class in Poland. Its membership amounts to 20,000, besides the Youth Organisation " Freiheit," with a membership of 12,000. In addition to that the " Haoved," an organisation of skilled workers and artisans with a membership of 14,000, co-operates with the Party. Taking into account the 30,000 members of " Hechaluz," the " Young Hechaluz " and " Gordonia," which are allied to the World Zionist Labour Movement, there are in Poland about 100,000 organised men and women actively striving for a working Palestine. Including the " Hashomer Hazair " the bloc of "Working Palestine" in Poland commands a membership of 125,000. 246
