that about 100,000 Zloty have been collected for this particular purpose (in addition of course to the regular campaigns for the K.K.L.). The settling of the Akiba group in Palestine is thus assuming a concrete form. (b) The Scout organisation Hanoar Hazioni is organised in seventy localities, having a membership of about 5,000. This organisation, too, publishes an organ Hanoar Hazioni issued in Warsaw. In order to effect closer contact between the members of this organisation several educational settlements have been established, attended by about 500 youths. The members of this organisation take an active part also in the local societies of the West Galicia Zionist Organisation. These two organisations educate the Jewish Youth in the Chaluz spirit, and train the youth for public and collective life in Palestine. The number of training centres for General Zionist Youth in West Galicia is 29, and the number of General Zionist Chaluzim working in the centres amounts to 1,059. (c) The senior section of the Youth organised in societies under the name of Bnei Zion has increased in membership thanks to the efforts of the Executive of the Zionist Organisation in West Galicia. They exist in about fifty places and are also organised on a Chaluzim basis. They fulfil an important cultural propaganda rôle among the adult youth. Similarly the academic Youth organisation Hashachar has progressed. Recently many local societies in the provinces have been reorganised. 3. Press.—In addition to the weekly Akiba mentioned above, the Organisation publishes a daily in Polish called Nozvy Dziennik. This daily, which is of long standing, plays an important rôle in Zionist life in West Galicia. It is widely circulated among the general Jewish public and even among the assimilationist circles. In addition to that the following weeklies are published : the Juedisches Volksblatt, in Polish and German, published by the Zionist Committee in Bielske, and the Tyrodnik Zydowski, in Polish, published by the Zionist Committee in Tarnow. All these papers have greatly contributed to the dissemination of the Zionist idea, and they are now published in larger editions. Last year there was also published the fortnightly Der Ruf in Yiddish, the organ of the headquarters of the General Zionists. 4. Cultural Activities.—The study of Hebrew is widespread both among Zionists and the general Jewish public. There is not a single town with a Jewish population where there are not classes for the study of Hebrew among the youth. Plays are being performed in the Hebrew language for the purpose of propagating Hebrew. The Hebrew book has become of vital importance to every Zionist who thinks seriously of Jewish and Zionist problems. 5. Finance. (a) The Shekel. In 1933, the year of the 18th Congress, the number of Shekel payers in West Galicia reached 33,000, a figure 227
