cultural movement is as yet hardly organised owing to the absence <of the necessary leaders. The poverty of the Jewish masses has made terrible progress. In consequence the pressure exercised by the masses upon the Palestine Office in Salonica has been such that disturbances repeatedly took place in the Zionist Offices, and the management of the Palestine Office has become such a formidable task that it is very difficult to find qualified persons to undertake it. Mr. I. Gruenbaum and Mr. Aba Houchi have visited Salonica in connection with immigration matters. From October 1st, 1934, until the end of March, 1935, the Palestine Office in Salonica received 156 immigration certificates for Palestine. On the basis of these certificates 564 persons emigrated from Salonica and 90 from the provinces. Greece occupies the highest position as regards the average number of immigrants per certificate who settled in Palestine. The most striking feature in the immigration from Greece during the last few years has been the establishment at Haifa of about 300 European families of dock labourers, who have won an important position in the labour market in Palestine. Their settlement has proved such a success that a beginning has been made with the employment of Salonica workers also at the Port ,of Jaffa. Another important development in Greek Zionism has been the creation of the Hechaluz movement, which has branches in several towns. A fair amount of progress has been made in the work of practical training, and three groups of Chaluzim from Greece have already been established in special Kibbuzim at Magdiel and Gan Shlomo. HOLLAND. The Executive of the Dutch Zionist Federation consists of the following:—Dr. A. J. Herzberg, President; Dr. Ch. Polak, Secretary; Dr. P. Denekamp, Dr. K. J. Edersheim, Dr. I. L. Hamburg, M. J. Simons, and Frau A. Straschnow-Cahn. The editorial board of the " Joodsche Wächter " consists of the following : F. Bernstein, Dr. S. Isaac, J. Mossel and A. Polak. The Executive of the Zionist Federation also consists of the Executive of the K.K., which is a special foundation in Holland. The K.K. commissioner for Holland is Frau A. Straschnow-Cahn. The Executive officers of the K.H. in Holland are Dr. L. E. Visser, Chairman, and Dr. B. A. Kahn, Secretary. The membership of the Federation shows an appreciable increase from July 1st, 1932, to July 1st, 1934, viz. : from 2,094 to 3,174. The energetic propaganda of a political character which the Federation has carried on since the events in Germany has decisively influenced this increase. 217
