interest and activity, coupled with the economic depression through which Australia had been passing, more time and labour had to be expended on this mission than ever before. Its success was gratifying both from the moral and from the financial point of view. New Zealand.—After the conclusion of his Australian trip, Dr. Shein proceeded to New Zealand in January, 1934, visiting Wellington, Auckland, Hamilton, Christchurch and Dunedin. To a large extent the conditions and results were similar to those in Australia. China.—Dr. Shein left New Zealand for China in March, 1934. Hongkong, with its small and poor community, was the first port of call, followed by Shanghai, where the response was far more satisfactory. Japan.—A short stay was made in Kobe and the time used to the best advantage. Manila {Philippine Islands).—Dr. Shein spent twelve days in Manila in a community consisting of some seventy to eighty families, without a Rabbi. Meetings and other functions were arranged and well attended. Dutch East Indies.—Dr. Shein's stay in the Dutch East Indies was highly successful. In every single one of the numerous points covered by him he found exceptionally devoted and willing collaborators. The financial result was correspondingly satisfactory. Singapore.—Dr. Shein spent a fortnight in Singapore. His visit served to revive Zionist sentiment and activity which, it is hoped, will be taken charge of by the Jewish Club formed during his stay there. The prominent members of the Jewish community were most generous in their support of Dr. Shein's mission. On his return journey to Palestine, Dr. Shein touched at Belavan, Medan and Penang. Algeria.—In January, 1934, a successful Keren Hayesod campaign was carried through by Mme. Sasia Erlich in Algiers, Constantine, Blida and other cities, actively supported by Mr. Isaac Senanes in Algiers. Much credit for the success of the fundraising effort was further due to Messrs. Ernest Dadon, Dr. Morali, Dr. Charles Aboulker, Emile Amar, Elie Gosland and Dr. Andre Safar in Algiers, Messrs. Andre Bakouche, Zaoni, El Kaim, Emile Zerbib, Henri Lellouche and Maurice Laloum in Constantine, and Mr. M. Bensaid in Blifa. Egypt.—Dr. Alexander Goldstein conducted the fund-raising effort in Alexandria in 1934. Thirty per cent of the proceeds of that campaign were earmarked for the Sephardic settlement Kfar Hittin. The funds collected by the Egyptian Committee for the victims of anti-Semitism were made available for the establishment of the village of Yedidiah in Emek Hefer, where forty German families have been settled. In the Spring of 1935, Mme. Sasia Erlich undertook a Keren Hayesod Drive in Cairo and Alexandria. Mr. Raphael Toriel and Mr. Leo Bassan are the representatives of the Head Office and Alexandria and Cairo respectively. 137
