Mr. M. Finkelstein, Director of the Central Office, organised the propaganda activities throughout the country. Mr. L. Jaffe headed the campaign of 5694 and Dr. I. Olsvanger that of 5695. The Board of Directors suffered a great loss through the death of Dr. W. Berkelhammer. Eastern Galicia.—The steadily increasing impoverishment of the Jewish population and the drain on their number through emigration, are very noticeable. Dr. I. Olsvanger conducted the campaign of 5694. In October, 1934, Dr. Hantke visited Lemberg and fully discussed the problems with the Keren Hayesod Curatorium, which Dr. Alexandrowitz and Dr. Grabscheid had newly joined. The Curatorium had to deplore the death of Dr. Alexander Mayer and of Dr. Joseph Parnas during the period under review. The campaign of 5695 was carried through with local forces. Canada—-Mr. A. J. Freiman, President of the Zionist Organisation, continued as Chairman of the Keren Hayesod Committee, Rabbi Jesse Schwartz being in charge of the office. Keren Hayesod work falls within the province of the National Council, with Rabbi Jesse Schwartz as Executive Director. In 1933, Mr. L. Jaffe conducted the campaign, whilst in 1934 it was inaugurated by a series of speeches delivered over the air, including addresses by Mr. R. B. Bennett, Prime Minister of Canada, and Mr. A. J. Freiman. Mass meetings had been arranged all over the country in order to coincide with the delivery of the speeches. Holland.—During the period under review the number of contributors increased by 55 per cent. On the other hand, the German relief collections, the establishment of the training village, Wieringermeer, and the effect of the economic crisis, lowered the level of individual contributions. Dr. Otto Abeles, delegate of the Head Office, is in charge of the work, assisted by Miss Catherien Asser and Messrs. Asscher, Hartog and Wolff. So far as delegates from abroad were concerned, Dr. N. Goldmann, Dr. Josef Kastein and Dr. Michael Traub addressed mass meetings at different periods. The membership of the Curatorium remained unchanged. Czechoslovakia.—Dr. Armin Weiner remains at the head of the Central Committee of the Keren Hayesod. In the autumn of 1934, Dr. Hugo Herrmann removed to Palestine, as a consequence of which Dr. Arthur Bergmann remained in sole charge of the Prague office. In the course of 1933, Dr. A. Hantke and Mr. Leo Herrman paid visits to Czechoslovakia. Mr. L. Jaffe went there at the beginning of the current year. Mr. Kurt Blumenfeld, Dr. N. M. Gelber and Messrs. Fisik Springer and Richard Steiner took part in the work. Jugoslavia.—During the period covered by the present report the Committee, consisting of Dr. Leo Steindler, Chairman, Messrs. Simo Spitzer, Dr. Friedrich Pops and Dr. Z. Neumann, reported excellent progress. Local Committees were revived and the steadily increasing number of contributors ensured a record income in 5694. Dr. I. Olsvanger, closely seconded by the General Secretary, Mr. T ■) Q I33
