# 18 Uewe , 0 Dear Dr. Sklarz .... My father, Hermann Mamlok, born in Breslau (1883) - died in New York (1949) was the proprietor of the "Leinwand - und Wäschehaus Mamlok" on Kupferschmiedestrasse, just around the corner from the Ring. My mother, Ruth Mamlok, nee Loewenstein, also was born in Breslau (1903) died in New York (1980). The morning after Kristallnacht, my father, like so many others, was arrested on the Street, taken prisoner und shipped to Buchenwald. He was released in the spring of 1939. My brother Julius, born in Breslau in 1934, is now residing in Connecticut. I also am a native Breslauer, born in 1928. Both of us attended the Rhedigerplatz Schule. Our family was issued a visa early in 1939, enabling us to immigrate to the United States. We left Breslau in August 1939, a few days betöre World War II was declared. We settled in New York City upon arrival in America. I married Sam Modiano, a first generation American-born son of a Sephardic family from Salonika. After raising my family, a son Albert and a daughter Stephanie, I went to work teaching Home Economics at a residential treatment school for emotionally disturbed teenage boys and girls. The “Mitteilungen” offered most interesting historical and informational articles about the city of my birth and its vicinity. The entire staff of the Mitteilungen deserve a "most hearty Thank You - well done" for their dedication and Service. May all of you enjoy many more years of Good Health and Serenity. Warm regards, Evalore Modiano (geh. Mamlok) 45, Magnolia Drive, Dobbs Ferry, NY 10522, U.S.A. •klrk Dear Readers, Looking forward to getting another edition of the "Verband der Breslauer". I will send you some information about myself today! Yes, both my husband and I were born in Breslau and left in 1939 to Shanghai, China. My name was Ilse Schäfer. I went to the Anger-Schule, right by the New Synagogue. What a terrible shock it was to see it burning on November 9, 1938. At that time, I was 14 years old (Hans Bloch gave English lessons to my Dad at that time). Hans was one of the last Jews to make the Abitur from the König-Wilhelm-Gymnasium. It is in his memory and honor that I am putting this down in writing. We got married in Shanghai and Mr. Heinrich Marks, who was my music teacher in the Jewish school, played the "Harmonium". That was in 1945. Hans Bloch passed away in 2001 aged almost 87. We went back to Wroclaw in 1988 for a short visit, also inside the Rathaus, and saw the old Synagogue; also Südpark and Scheitnig and the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Platz, where I spent the first pari of my life. Although, in view of what happened, one should not get emotional about it, both my husband and I were a little carried away at that time after so many years. We also visited the Lohe-Friedhof, where my grandfather is buried. I used to live around the corner from there, in Goethestrasse. The Dominsel is still very impressive. My son, who was born in the good old U.S.A., wanted to see where his parents came from and went on his own to see Breslau. If anyone remembers me from the Angerschule, please get in touch with me: Thankyou, Ilse Bloch (geh. Schäfer) 2418-41si Avenue San Francisco, Ca 94116-2117 U.S.A. (signed) Ilse Bloch ■kick Sehr geehrter Herr Dr. Sklarz, ....
