7 MENORAH to ihis circumslance lhat therc is nu question ol .mothcr brother whose namc I founcl in an information. Possibly hc was clcacl at the time, without leaving issue. In the information mcntionccl above, this brother is culled Cerf Marx. He is said to havc been born in 1 787, and to have lived in Saarlois, laier in Aix-la-ChapclIc. 7 he namc Ccrf is followed by the Jcwish namc Hirsch in brackets, just as llic namc Heinrich is followed by the Jcwish namc Hirschcl. Since two living brothers as a rule do not bear the r.amc nanie, it is to be supposed that the name of Heinrich was not Hirschcl or Herschel, but I leschcl. We shall revert to this. As parents of the brothers and sisters botli uy the fathers and mother's side of the testatrix cnumerated above, Marx Levi, afterwards Marx and Eva nee Moses or Levouf are named. The name Levouf is followed by a note of interrogation in the papers. My revered friend Or. Pappenheim rightly recognised in this Moses Le\oul a descendant of the rabbi in Treves, Ahron Lwow whose descendance 1 dealt with in the second volume of my Vienna Inscriptions. One will, indeed, nol go wrong in seeing in the lather of the rabbis wifc Eva Marx, nee Moses or Levouf, the rabbi of Treves, Moses Lwow. i wo approbations of his are known to nie, one of the book Aspekclaria ha-Meirah d. d. Treves, 2end Cheshwan 32825th of October 1767, the second of the book Tophta Aruch printed in Met/., d. d. Treves, 29th Elul —- 1 3th of Sept. I 776. He as well as the other approvers who belong to the most prominent scholars of the time, are distinguished by the title „ha-Gaon". Aloses Lwow must be identified with the clireel descendant of Isak Sinzheim, the father of David Sinzheim, the President of the synhedrion istablished by Napoleon, and brother in law of the distinguished champion of the emaneipation of Jews in France, Cerf Berr. Now, whose son was Moses Lwow? Ii is a pity that in the signatures of the approbations the namc of the father which is usually mentioned is omitted. In sifling the material of which 1 trcal in the book mentioned before, one, at lirst, fully believes that he cannot belong 10 the Austrian brauch of the Lwows. Of the two who went by the namc of Moses, one died as the Rabbi of Moravia in the year 1757, the other as a gentlcman of means in 1823 in Preüburg. If we take a look round Treves ilself we find that the preclecessor of Isak Sinzheimer in the rabbi's chair was the district rabbi Josua Heschel Lwow who afterwards became rabbi of Ansbach. Now it is obvious to identify our Moses Lwow as the son of the former rabbi of Treves, Josua Hcschel Lwow, the more so as the the hereditarincss of such offices was customary. The communities simply considered it their duty to leave the son, in case he possc>sed evening slar shine upon you. I wish that you may soon loci glad and at home in our Hille family circle, and may God preserve my Utile »ngel to the joy of all of us! If it is not too much troublc, my dearest auntic, let me have a line soon how you are, and when you are going to be here. Trier, 2. Cheschwan 328 23.
