8 M E N O R A H ihc required knowledge, in the office of thc father. I must add thal in thc list (incompletc and wanting critical sifting) of the rabbis and scholars of Trcves of thc Jewish Encyclopedia (p. 5) two persons are catalogucd among thc last rabbis by the namc of Moses Lwow and Moses b. Josua Heschel. There can be no doubl thal both thc names refer to one and the samc peison. 1 he author took both names from two different sources one of which contained the family namc, the other — most certainly a local one — the name of the father. The reference in that place to Friedberg, Luchot Sikaron, p. 78, shows hovv carelessly thc slalemens were taken over. Friedbcrg's Moses Lwow really is our Moses Lwow, but the reference of briedberg to Dembitzer is wrong, for Dembitzer in the passagc under noticc deals of Moses b. Ahron Lwow who, as mentioned before, died as the Rabbi of Moravia. Anyhow, thc statement thal there existed in 1 reves a rabbi named Aloses b. Josua Hcshel, is right. But he is identical with Moses Lwow. In face of this it seems superflous to revert to the name in question, „Hcshel" which, I think ought to be read instead of „Hershel". Thc namc of the great grandchild wou!d, surely, give eviclence of the great grandfathership of Josua Heshel. 1t nced not be callcd to mind that the author of the book mentioned above and printed in Fürth, Mordcchai Model who had applied for thc approbation was a resident of Schwabach, the rabbinical chair of Josua Heshel Lwow. In any case it is very extraordinary that books printed in Fürth should bear the approbation of thc rabbi's office in Treves. Moses Lwow docs not mention Ins father, neither does Josua Heshel Lwow in the numerous approbations by bis own hand. As a rule he did not even add to Iiis first name the name of origin, Lwow, which had alrcady become a settled family name. But this time we need not puzzle our heads about the namc of the father. In the entry, quoled from the Schwabach memor-book by Löwenstein, Nathaniel Weil, pp. 66 and 3 on the death of Josua Heshel Lwow which oecurred on the 13th of January in the year 1771, he is explicitly sladet to bc the son of the scholar Ahron Mose* Jecheskcl of Lemberg. But Ahron Moses Jecheskel is the rabbi Ahron Lwow (with bis füll name Ahron Moses Jecheskcl), the son of Moses of Lemberg (Lwow). This is also to be seen from an Alsatian death-roll; comnarc Revue des Stüdes Juives 40, p. 242. Josua Heshel Lwow was a prominent scholar. His Responsa ,,Pene Lebana" which he mentions in his expert opinion printed in in the RGAcollection „Or ha-Jashar" folio 71, and which Josef Steinhardt (Mashbir Bar, folio 51) also knew, was never printed. Whether it still exists in manuscript, I do not know. I looked for it in vain among thc calalogues of manuscripts of the notable European collection1). (To be continued) 1) Compare cod. (Fortsetzung folgt)
