156 Joseph Caro einsah. In der Bibel war er sehr beschlagen. “To the last, as Lord Iddesleigh has pointed out, he studied the Bible in the earliest hours“ (Sichel S. 32). Alas! for the House of Commons and the country; we shall never see your like. The days of Giants are over. Ichabod! In einer Rede in Manchester bedient er sich des Bildes von der Jacobsleiter: “Knowledge is like the mystic ladder in the patriarclTs dream: its base rests on the primeval earth, its crest is lost in the shadowy splendor of the empyrean; while the great authors who for traditionary ages have held the claim of Science and philosophy, of poetry and erudition, are the angels ascending and descending the sacred scale, and maintaining, as it were, the communication between men and heaven.“ — “To love God with all his heart, and soul, and strength and mind, and his neighbours as himself“ (Deut 65 und Lev 1918). — These two principles are embalmed in the writings of Moses, and are the essence of Christian morals. — “He that maketh haste to be rieh shall. not be innocent“ (Prov 2820), heißt es im Vivian Grey (S. 21 Hughenden ed.), mit welchen Worten der Vater seinen Sohn Vivian vor dem Glanze des Reich-
