21 is also to be regretted that the ejditor should have thought it > necessary to expurgate the text (p. 70), especially where there . is only one Ms. which has this passage. Such works as the Pilpül are not intended for the dass room, and to the Scholar: the integrity of a text is of far greater importance than euphemism. No one would ever dream of accusing a modern Rabbi of accepting the arguments and phrases öf a Mediaeval author sine grano salis. Besides, if one were to üphold the Standard of good taste, he would have to ömit a great many more passages in the Pilpuj, or leave it altogether rest in tbe obscurity of the libraries. To proceed now to some special points, we find (p. 11). that the editor :still doubts whether Casale was Rappa’s place of residence. Evidently he overlooked the proofs I brought (Parody in Jewish Literature, p 265—6) to sustain the assertion ofProf. Krauss on this point. This may be of slight , importance, as the editor says, still, there is no prohibition against being exact in little matters, I therefore append here below a copy of an autograph letter of Jonah Rappa which shows , that he actually lived at Casale in the year 1680. Incidentally it also shows that he spelled his name Rappa, not Rapah, nor Rapa1). Further proof, if it be at all necessary, that the Pilpul was not written in 1380, I find now on p. 50 in the citation fröm ״Stati del Mondoa of 1682 and on p. 63, where a certain custom is described as having been instituted by Bishop .Paul of נולה in the Province of Naples in the year 1670. In this This letter which is written to his uncle is addressed in Italian to Biniainin Sacert. Yittale. It is very likely Benjamin Coen Yittale the Rabbi öf Regio (16B1—1780) pupil of Moses Zacuto and teacher of Israel Bassano.
