57 the Columbia Copy was printed in Cadiz. Jt bears the subscription ״Con Licericia: En Cadiz por Don Manuel Espinosa de los Modteros, Impressor Real de Marina, en la Calle de S״ Francisco.״ There are önly eight pages, and no date whatcver is mentiofied. J ean find no notice about any other copy of this little work. There is no doubt that this is a translation of the printed Polish petition mentioned byGraetz, Frank und die Frankisten, pp. 8 and 44. It is interesting to see that this memorial was printed three times in Spanish: in Madrid, Mexico and Cadiz. Steinschneider (1. c) believed that the subscription in Mr. Bersohn’s Copy ״reimpresso en Mexico, en la imprenta de la Bibliotheca Mexicana. Ano de 1759״ was fictifious: and he seems to be followed by Kayserling. I see no reason for this doubt; which leads me to speak of another curiosity. In the same Columbia University Library I have come across another book relating to the Jews and pubiished in Mexico, some fifty years later. I can find no notice of it in any of the bibliographical material at my disposal. The subject of the ״Deereto״ and the Napoleonic SanLe rin covers no more than the last thirty pages of the book. The rest is taken up with a short account of the history, rites, beliefs etc. of the Jews• The author’s authorities seem in general to be: Eydeck’s Defensa de la Religion, CalmePs Dictionnaire de laßible, Fleury^s Moeurs des Israelites, and Histoire ecclesiastique, Gregoire’s Histoire des Sectes Religieuses etc. The illustratiöns seem all to be taken from Calmet. Cancelada firmly believes (pp. 97 seq.) that the American Jndeans arc descendants of the ten lost tribes. For the second pärt (on the Sanhedrin), hp has simply copied the reports in the Journal de!,Empire, the Mercur Franqais and the Moiüiteur. The author of the book was a very prolific witer (see the General Catalogue of the Printed Books in the British Museum s. y. and Sabine, Dictionary of Books relating to America). He was editor of Gazetas de Mexico 1806—1809, El Telegrafo Americano, 1811 and El Telegrafo Mexicano 1813,
