КАГАН Матвей Исаевич (1889, с. Пятницкое Псковской губ. – 1937, Москва), ученый-обществовед. В 1897–1904 посещал рус. школу для евр. детей в Невеле, одноврем. получил традиц. евр. образование. В 1905 окончил гор. уч-ще. С 1904 чл. РСДРП, подвергался арестам. Высш. филос. образование получил в Германии, в 1907–14 учился в Лейпцигском, Берлинском, Марбургском ун-тах. В 1914 был интернирован как подданый страны, воевавшей с Германией. Во время ареста написал ст., поев, филос. осмыслению проблемы войны. С тех пор осн. науч. интерес К. – философия истории. Вернувшись из Германии в 1918, сблизился в Невеле с философами и литературоведами М.М.Бахтиным и Л.В.Пумпянским, оказал на них значит. влияние. В 1920 читал лекции по евр. мифологии в Евр. ун-те в Петрограде. В 1922—24 работал в учреждениях Наркомпроса, преподавал в евр. детдоме в Малаховке (Моск. обл.).
