SHAPIRO Israel (1882, Seyny, Provinz Suwalk - 1957, Israel), Bibliograph, Orientalist. Stange. in der Familie des Rabbiners und Publizisten Tuvii-Peisakh (1845-1924). Erhielt eine Tradition. Jüdische Religion Ausbildung, studierte an der Jeschiwa, an der Universität Straßburg und am Höheren. Jüdische Schule (Leranstalt) in Berlin. In den Jahren 1907-10 unterrichtete er 1911-13 am Teacher's Institute in Jerusalem - in New York nahm er an der Veröffentlichung von Gas teil. "Ga-Dror". In den Jahren 1913 bis 1944 leitete er den neu geschaffenen semitischen Sektor der Bibliothek des US-Kongresses und systematisierte eine Sammlung von 40.000 Tonnen, einschließlich Inkunabeln und anderer Raritäten. Vortrag an der George Washington University (1916–27). Seit 1950 - in Israel. Autor pl. publ. in der Presse über jüdische Geschichte und Bibliographie auf Hebräisch und Jiddisch.
