General Subsidy Expenditure, for 1934-5. £P. £P. For hygienic and ophthalmic services in schools 8,705 1,620 For child treatment services ...... ... 10,765 925 Hospital for consumptives in Safed...... 5,276 1,700 Total ... ...... 24,746 4,245 It is worth noting that Government support was given to the above services for the following reasons : (a) There are no corresponding services under Government control (as in the case of services for the prevention of consumption), and (b) these services have been functioning amongst the Arab population only (as in the case of hygienic services in the schools and child treatment). The Government also subsidised the municipal hospital in Tel- Aviv to the extent of £P. 5,250, which formed one sixth of the total yearly expenditure of that institution. It may be stated definitely that the total budget for the Jewish health services amounted last year to at least £P. 250,000. The Government's share in this expenditure amounted to £P. 10,000, i.e., only 4 per cent. Even this small subsidy was only obtained after protracted representations and under continuous pressure from our institutions. It is noteworthy that the High Commissioner's attitude in this matter has always been favourable. 10. The representations to the Government with regard to the subsidy to Jewish health services for the period 1935-36 have not produced satisfactory results. Our requests for financial assistance are outlined in the following table : Total Subsidy Subsidy Expenobtained requested diture. for 1934-5. for 1935-6. £P. £P. £P.
