the general agreement. The Department for the settlement of German Jews is investing £P. 5,000, and the Jewish National Fund share consists of the investments previously made in these places. Neither the Funds nor the Jewish Agency nor the Companies are responsible to the Imperial Chemical Industries for the loan. They merely transfer the loan to the settlements concerned, carry out the irrigation work, arrange the mortgages or the machinery of the company, and collect the debts. The settlers will repay the loan to the company in twelve years at the rate of 6 per cent. This is the first instance of co-operating with private capital in public colonisation work on satisfactory terms. The " Emek " Company has already commenced boring operations in a large number of settlements, and the results obtained so far are as follows : In Mishmar Haemek the volume of water found is 60 cubic metres per hour. In Sdeh Jacob the volume of water found is only 12 cubic metres per hour, and boring operations are continuing. In Nahalal the volume of water found is 60 cubic metres per hour at a depth of 200 metres. In Ramath David and Gebeth a depth of 180 metres has so far been reached without any result. In Kfar Joshua a depth of 100 metres has so far been reached also without result. 335
