The type of settlement in the new colonisation zone is smaller than the extensive type hitherto established, which requires considerable investments. The unit of settlement allotted to each family is 15-18 dunams, of which 3 dunams are for a building site, 7 dunams are light soil and the remainder heavy soil. The size of the unit varies according to the relation between light and heavy soil. The original settlement provided for every settler 1 pedigree cow, 50 fowls, irrigation for 10 dunams : 3 dunams for orange groves, and the rest for vegetables and hay for cows. In course of time, the settler himself will be able to judge which of the several branches of his mixed holding is most suitable for him, and make arrangement accordingly. Until the final consolidation of his holding, until at least his plantations bear fruit, the settler will have to work outside his settlement to balance his budget. 3. The Size of the Required Loan per Settler. It has been accepted that the settler himself must contribute at least £P. 100 towards his holding, but it appears that most of the settlers who have been approved by the Department will have contributed even more, both in cash and in assets which they have put in from time to time in the various branches of the holding.
