for the extension of the social welfare institutions so as to accommodate a larger number of German children. A further grant of £100 was also made by the Women's Appeal Committee to enable the German girls in England selected for transference to Palestine institutions to be given preliminary training in agricultural work. Thanks to these special grants, loans and private donations, the Organisation was able to have a number of new school buildings constructed and improvements introduced in the existing ones. In this way it was possible to meet to a larger extent than before the applications from girls from European countries for admission to training institutions in Palestine. In consideration of the German situation the Government of Palestine granted 112 students' certificates for girls specifically from Germany for last year, and in autumn a quota of 162 students' certificates for general distribution for the year 1934/35. The prospective students were selected by WIZO representatives abroad and on their arrival will be sent to the various institutions. PALESTINE. 1. Agriculture. ■ Agricultural School for Girls at Nahalal. A second school house has been built containing accommodation for fifty students, training kitchen, class-room, library, etc. Electricity has been installed throughout the estate and improvements in the farming branches (such as new chicken coops) have been carried out, thus augmenting the training facilities. Final consolidation of the institution will, however, only be possible with the increase of water-supply, which is expected as a result of the borings for water being carried out at present. The teaching staff has been enlarged by two members. Girls' Training Farm " Ayanoth " near Ness Ziona. The first two dwelling-houses have been built for 25 students each to replace the hitherto provisional quarters. The number of students thus could be raised from 40 to 70. Moreover, a bakery and laundry with electric machinery have been built as well as a sick-room (the farm being situated at some distance from the colony). The following farm-buildings have been added : a water-reservoir, a horse-stable, additional poultry-coops, a packing house for citrusfruit. These investments have brought the institution a considerable step forward in the way of its final establishment. At the same time, the curriculum of theoretical lessons has been widened and two new teachers have been employed. The Four Smaller Training Farms. In the three Farms in Judaea, the number of students has been increased by 8 to 10 each, bringing the number to 25 or 30 respectively. Improvements in the farming branches have been introduced, such as new poultry houses, increase of cattle, repairs to dwelling houses and one farm, 259
