Conferences.—These are held biennially, generally a few months before the time fixed for the World Zionist Congress. The 15th South African Zionist Conference was held at Bloemfontein from May 30th to June 2nd, 1935, and was attended by delegates. Messages were read from the Governor-General and from General Smuts as well as from various Zionist leaders. The reports and debates covered all aspects of Zionist work and dealt with a number of specific problems relating both to the movement in South Africa as well as particular developments in Palestine. Executive.—The Executive elected at the recent Conference was as follows : Honorary President, Chief Rabbi Dr. J. L. Landau; Hon. Vice-Presidents, Bernard Gordon and M. Kentridge, M.P.; Chairman, N. Kirschner; Vice-Chairman, A. L Miller; Hon. Treasurer, S. M. Gordon; Executive Committee, J. Bahr, J. Daleski, B. Gering, Mrs. E. Gluckmann, Mrs. E. Hayman. J. Janower, H. Kallenbach, H. J. Kirsch, S. M. Kuperr I. Levy, Cecil Lyons, W. Senior, I. Shaffer, L. Tager. Officials.—The General Secretary is Mr. J. Alexander. Mr. Dainow is the Editor and Manager of the Zionist Record. Mr. H. Levin, who was Secretary of the National Fund Department since 1932, has returned to Palestine and the position has been taken by Mr. Israel Dunsky. Propaganda and Organisation. The Propaganda and Organisation Department, of which Mr. I. Dunsky and Mr. A. Abrahamson have successively been Secretaries, has maintained constant contact with Jewish centres throughout the country. Apart from the visits made by the Secretaries, considerable propaganda was carried out by Mr. Sokolow and Mr.. L. Jaffe during their tours in 1934, and valuable services are now being rendered by Dr. Benzion Shein (delegate of the K.K.). The Department is in continuous correspondence with all societies, which are furnished with advice, information and material. The work of propaganda was greatly furthered by the lecture tour of Mr. Maurice Samuel from August to December, 1933, and that of Mr. M. Kleinmann early in 1935. The Department for Youth Work has enabled the Zionist Youth Council to undertake manifold activities for the promotion of Zionism among the rising generation. The Chaluz Farm, which it established two years ago, has already turned out a number of Chaluzim who have been sent to Palestine. The Department for Women's Work is able to record successful developments during the past two years. The number of societies has been substantially increased and the activity of every society was intensified. The Women's Council and its Executivemaintained close and continuous contact with women Zionists throughout the country, an outstanding feature being the frequent visits paid by members of the Executive to the various branches. 237
