116 coming Your Lordship in the most solemn and deeplyfelt manner. While sharing, with the wliole civitised World in admiration of a man, who, in his position of one of the most highgifted and influential English statesmen, has in the course of an active life produced to beneficial an effect on the fortunes of mankind, we, the Israelites, feel particularly called upon, to devote our unlimited gratitude and veneration to the leader of the English House of Commons, who has indefatigably in every way ex.ert.ed himself, to remove the late exclusion of our brethren from the full enjoyment of civil rights in England, to the ever ready Champion of Iiberty of fasth and conscience. Welcome then, noble Lord, on German ground, where, not less than in your native country, innumerable hearts are yours! In the face of all Europe we are proud to express our gratitude to you. Her Majesty, the queen, has chosen you for the accomplishment of a great object, that of restoring peace to the troubled world. May the Divine Providence crown Your Lordships exerlions with success! Who can observe them without Unterest and suspense? But, noble lord, in consideration of the natural tie, which unites all the members of a religious persuasion, we feel anxious to urge an important request upon Your Lordship. The principal object of this peace is the Settlement of the rights, that are to belong to the ßajahs living in the dominions of His Majesty, the Sultan. But those ßajahs are not only Christians; there is upwards of half a million of jews among them. We tremble, lest the principal powers should, in regard of religion, make a difference between the ßajahs, in consequence of which our brethren living in the Turkish dominions, would sink still lower. Your Lordship is better than any one eise aware, that, if but one half a principle is carried out, there is no security, that this half will permanently remain in possession of its rights. It is only bv an entire civil equality of all the subjects of a state, that the System of intolerance can be abolished for all. If the jews in Turkey are left in the civil position they have hitherto occupied, the adversaries of the Christians will constantly have before their eyes a state of things, le which they will be desirous of reducing the Christians also. We therefore venture, humbly and urgently to intreat Your Lordship, not to forget our jewish brethren in te great work of negociation of peace. Who, but Your Lordship, bears more in his heart the proud feeling of befriending those, who have no external power at their side, but only the Claims of humanity and human right- Truly, the blessing of that God, whose children we all are, will descend on the restoration of peace and right only, if nobody is excluded from their benefits. One year ago a deputation from the jews of London received from Her Majesty s government some cheering promises on this subject. We then heg leave to express this fervent wish: that the Divine Providence may graut Your Lordship a lang life and the most complete success in all your exertions in behalf of justice and humanity. Such are, in respect of Your Lordship, the Sentiments and wishes, that animate all the Israelites of Germany, and happy in being able to express those Sentiments etc. etc.
