Aus Briefen von Rudolf Eucken, William James, Henri Bergson an Julius Goldstern Look at Rickert and Münsterberg! Pray send me anything that you may write..... I will send you tomorrow some recent Essays of my own. Your book on Anglo American thought will interest me, of course.------ Cambridge (Mass.) U.S., Oct nth 1906. Wm. James. I need hardly say that your letter has given me extreme pleasurc---- I am getting numerous acknowledgments of my book, but only one so far has been as enthusiastically sympathetic as yours. It is evident, that your mind and mine are cut on the same pattern. I shall eagerly read your review of myself ^nd Schiller and look forward with equal eagerness to the publication of your volume. You ask about translating my "Talks"-apparently you have never seen the translation by Kiesovv, published (I believe) by Engelmann (?) about 1900. I have never heard a syllable from anyone about it, so I conclude that no one has bought or read it in Germany. No more have I heard a single word about my 4 Essays published by Fromann. Pray drop therefore the idea of translating me. Professor W. Jerusalem of Wien has already undertaken to translate the Pragmatism-I hope that he may find a publisher, but I fear he may not. The Germans, as you say, are given over to Monism, monism in the depths, however empiricist they may appear on the surface. My empiricism and pluralism are in the depths also. Have you read Bergsons "Evolution Creatrice"? It seems to me to give the final death blow to rationalism.----- Cambridge (Mass). U.S., August 6th 1907. Wm. James. I have read your article (for which I thank you) in the Internationale Wochenschrift on my Varieties with the keenest delight, and I must thank you heartily for taking such a deal of trouble in my behalf. Few Literaturberichte show the qualities that that article show-s; of fidelity, completeness: and lucidity-I only wish that I could think all the praise deserved! I am •glad that you went into that digression about Myers and the S. P.R.; anid, I hope that your article will draw many new readers to the book--- Cambridge, Jan. 2oth 1909. Wm. James. 413
