Jahrgang 1 Berlin, 1. Juni 1934 Nr. 5 Competition on the Palestine Market By Dr. Bernhard Spitz. The English export is far ahead of the German in the struggle for the Palestine Market. Although the mandatory power receives no direct commercial politica! preference — Palestine, as is known, is not included in the Ottawa Agreements — and consequently the possibilities of competition are theoretically on the same footing, England's share in the total imports ot Palestine is regularly 70 to 80 % higher than the German share. (Tab.l.) » Imports into Palestine Import Palästinas Tab. 1 Total £P aus England from England * aus Deutschland from Germany % 1930 6 985 000 1 164 000 16,6 762000 10,9 1931 5940000 998.000 16,6 638000 10,7 1932 7,770000 1 522000 19,6 775000 10,0 1933 11 120000 1 950000 17,5 1 197 000 i 10,7 This fact does not, however, signify the superiority of the English Export offer over the German. There are obviously other circumstances which give the English export this considerable advantage and in fact a more careful examination of the figures shows that the influence of the Orders from the Government and semi-official quarters in the English mother country makes itself clearly apparent in the import statistics. If the item " Non-classified Goods " is omitted from the total imports drawn up from the customs reports — which item includes the imports of the Governments of Palestine and Transjordania, fort the Police, the Military and the Iraq Petroleum Co. — it will be found that the German export to Palestine is no longer far in arrears of the English figures. (Tab. 2.) England and Germany are highly industrialized refming countries with nearly similar export interests. Thus, it is obvious that the competition is most keen in the export of finished goods and a Classification according to the main groups. of the international list of goods shows that the export of German Industrial Products comes very close to the English Export in these groups. Whereas in the " Provisions " and " Raw materials and Half-finished Products" groups England is far in advance of Germany, in the " Finished products " the two competing countries are practically equal. (Tab. 3.) Owing to the German and English conditions it is natural that in almost every item in connection with the import of finished products German and English goods are in competition . . . . , ^Deutschland , ,_ , England _ vj England Germany | j Germany i Total „nicht klass.
