- על היהודים שמצא במסעו כתב: "העדר הספרים והשמועות מטביע לבותם בבץ הסכלות והפתיות, ומשקיפים כפלאות כל חדשות ונצורות לא ידעום. ראמות להם חכמות ואולתם שמחה באמרם כי רבים חללים הפילה החכמה במהמורות המינות והכפירה. נהרת החכמה לא הופיעה ולא הגיעה אליהם עד הנה לבער שגיאות המוסר והבלי הנעורים. מסוה אמונה נבערת מדעת מסלף לבותם ומעור עיניהם." - הספר הוא תוצר של שהות המחבר בארצות אפריקה. בסוף ההקדמה הוא כותב: "הן כל המוצאות אשר השתרנו עלו על צוארי במשך מסעי הביאוני עד הלום שם ישבתי כמו ארבע שנים, ומקום היה לי להתערב בכל מיני אנשים גדולים וקטנים, ללמוד מעשיהם ולדעת את מוצאם ואת מובאם כמעט בכל דרכיהם".
עם זאת, הוא מדגיש כי אין לחשוש מעיוות הנתונים שהוא אסף על "מושא מחקרו". דיווחו הוא, לפי עדותו, מדעי: "ובכל זאת רק אשר חזיתי אותו אשמור לספר... ואל תשגיח לאומרים בלבבם כי כל עובר ארח ישפיל או ירים האמת כחפצו כל עוד שיתרחק מופת עדותו, כי יוכלו לחקור וימצאו כי כנים דברי".

- המחבר מבקש לתרום להשכלת הקוראים ולהביא לידיעתם מידע על אחיהם היהודים היושבים במרוקו, כדי לתקן את חוסר הידע הקיים לגבי נושא זה. כך הוא כותב בהקדמה: "מושב בני ישראל השוכנים לעת הזאת בגלילות הערביאים תחת ממשלת קיסר המאורי"טאניאה באפ'ריק"א הנקראת היום מאראקש בלשון ערבי' או מארוק בלשונותינו במלכות בארבארי"אה, כמעט כלו נעלם מעיני כל העמים היושבים הלום בארצות האאירו"פה. ובאמת איזה דרך תגיע שמועתם עדינו? דרך המסחר הלא מזער היא ... ואף אם מדובר בם בספרים אשר חוברו בלשונות הגוים על ענין קורות המערב הן לא נזכרו שם רק כחלק בערך אל הכל. אך מי זה יפותה לדבר על היהודים בל ידע לשונם?... הן אלה קצות הסבות אשר הדפוני להוציא לאור הספורים האלה הנוגעים באמת לאחי בני עמי בפרט ובכלל אולי אף לזרים אתם אם כי ישנו בתכליתם."
