ЗЕЛЬМАНОВ Абрам Леонидович (1913, Гадяч Полтавской губ. – 1987, Москва), астроном. Д-р физ.-матем. наук (1985). Окончил механико-математич. ф-т МГУ (1937) и аспирантуру Гос. астрономич. ин-та им. П.К.Штернберга (1941). В 1942–51 и в 1955—87 работал в этом же ин-те. С 1947 преподавал в МГУ (читал лекции по теории относительности, гравитации и космологии). В 1952—54 науч. консультант Моск. планетария.Развил релятивистскую теорию анизотропной неоднородной Вселенной, свойства к-рой различны в разл. направлениях. Разработал ряд математич. методов, позволяющих строить модели Вселенной при самых разл. предположениях. Развил математич. аппарат, применимый не только в космологии, но и в астрофизике компактных объектов, при анализе поведения электромагнитных и гравитац. полей в окрестностях нейтронных звезд и черных дыр. Высказал мысль, что возможность существования разумной жизни связана с процессом расширения Вселенной.
