В студенч. годы близок к радикальным кругам, участвовал в изд. рукописного журн. «Студенч. мир». По окончании ун-та служил в мин-ве юстиции. В 1885–1916 чл. (с 1903 – пред.) правления Петерб. учетного и ссудного банка – одного из крупнейших частных банков России, был близок к правительств. кругам, поддерживал дружеские и деловые связи с графом В.Н.Коковцовым (в 1904–14 мин. финансов, одноврем. в 1911–14 пред. Совета министров). В 1906 участвовал в переговорах с представителями франц. деловых кругов в Париже о предоставлении России крупного междунар. займа.
