В 1949 в период «борьбы с космополитизмом» был исключен из ин-та и из ВКП(б). В 1951 Драм. т-р им. К.С.Станиславского поставил первую пьесу У. «Правда о его отце» (в соавт. с Г.М.Калиновским). Среди др. пост.: «Последний трамвай» (Т-р драмы и комедии, Москва, 1960; снята после 4 спектаклей), «Незнакомые люди» (Т-р им. Лен. комсомола, 1961). В 1956 У. впервые обратился к жанру сказки – «Тайна светящегося камня» (Драм. т-р им.
