В кон. 1890-х – нач. 1900-х гг. был близок к социал-демократам. В 1900–10-х гг. препод. в Петерб. и Юрьевском ун-тах. В 1930 был арестован, в 1931 выслан в Алма-Ату. В 1931–33 препод. там же в ун-те. В 1933 вернулся в Ленинград. Подвергался нападкам в период «борьбы с космополитизмом». Автор работ по истории России и Европы 18–20 вв.
