Рос. ассоциации пролет. музыкантов (РАПМ). В 1931 окончил Моск. конс. по кл. фп. у К.Н.Игумнова, в 1936 – аспирантуру по истории музыки (рук. М.В.Иванов-Борецкий); одноврем. преподавал там же (1931, 1933–36). Читал курс истории заруб. музыки в конс. (в 1936–37 и в 1942–43 зав. кабинетом истории музыки) и в муз. уч-ще в Свердловске (в 1941–43 зав. муз.-теоретич. отд-нием). Преподавал в Центр. заочн. муз.-пед. ин-те в Москве (в 1939–41 зав. кафедрой истории музыки, с 1940 доц., декан ист.-теоретич. ф-та). В 1930–31 чл. редколлегии, секр., затем зав. редакцией журн. «Пролетарский музыкант», в 1931–32 – журн. «За пролетарскую музыку». В 1936–37 и 1941–43 сотр. редакции газ. «Уральский рабочий», а также зав. лит.-музыковедч. частью и лектор Свердловской филармонии, автор программ-пояснений к концертам. В 1938–40 и 1943–59 науч. ред. изд-ва «Сов. энциклопедия». В печати выступал с 1926. Автор работ по истории рус. и зарубежной музыки.
