ШТЕРН Бецалель (1798, Тарнополь, Галиция, Австрия – 1853, Одесса), педагог. В кон. 1820-х гг. по приглашению еврейской общины переселился в Одессу, где возглавил еврейскую школу, созд. в 1826 выходцами из Галиции. По инициативе Ш. было создано отд-ние для девочек, расширено преподавание светских наук (в т. ч. рус. и нем. яз.). В своей деятельности Ш. сталкивался с сопротивлением ортодоксальных кругов, преодолевая его благодаря поддержке гор. думы и ген.-губернатора Новороссии гр. М.С.Воронцова. В 1837 школу Ш. посетил имп. Николай I, к-рый выразил удовлетворение постановкой уч. процесса. Позднее Ш. вступил в конфликт с М.Лилиенталем, ведавшим устройством казенных еврейских школ; с 1843 чл. «комиссии, Высочайше учрежденной для образования евреев», участвовал в выработке программ казенных еврейских школ.
