В Петербурге Ш. приобрел популярность мастера худож. фотографии, являясь персональным фотографом видных рос. чиновников, а также Л.Н.Толстого. С 1887 стих. Ш. печатались в лит. периодич. изд. на рус. яз. и иврите. В 1883 в газ. «Гамелиц» опубл. критич. эссе о рассказе И.С.Тургенева «Еврей». В 1890 вышла поэма об А.Дрейфусе «Сидом» – образец стиля, характерного для Пятикнижия. Поэтич. произв.
