В 1906 с минимальным разрывом в счете проиграл матч за звание чемпиона России М.И.Чигорину (6,5:8,5). Участник 10 междунар. турниров в 1906–12; лучший результат – 2-е м. (Дюссельдорф, 1908). Сыграл три матча с А.К.Рубинштейном: один вничью (1903) и 2 проиграл (1904, 1907).
