ПИТАЕВСКИЙ Лев Петрович (р. 1933, Саратов), физик-теоретик. Проф. (1962), акад. АН СССР (1990). Окончил Саратовский гос. ун-т (1955). В 1959–60 работал в Ин-те земного магнетизма, ионосферы и распространения радиоволн АН СССР. С 1960 в Ин-те физ. проблем АН СССР (в 1988–92 рук. теоретич. отд.). Одноврем. преподавал в МФТИ. С 1992 работает в США. Получил (совм. с В.Л.Гинзбургом ур-ния, описывающие поведение сверхтекучего гелия–4 вблизи лямбда-точки. Предсказал сверхтекучесть гелия–3 в результате спаривания с ненулевым моментом. Вывел ур-ние для волн. функции неидеального бозе-газа (ур-ние Гросса-Питаевского) и иссл. структуру вихревых нитей в слабо неидеальном бозе-газе. Автор классич. работ по изучению спектра квазичастиц вблизи порога распада. Создал теорию ван-дер-ваальсовых сил (совм. с И.Е.Дзялошинским и Е.М.Лифшицем. Предсказал обратный эффект Фарадея. Решал задачи обтекания тел разреженной ионосферной плазмой. Получил новые решения нелинейного нестационарного бесстолкновит. кинетич. ур-ния, описывающего ударные волны и волны разрежения. Разработал (совм. с А.В.Гуревичем эффективный метод построения многосолитонных решений. Проанализировал интеграл столкновений в магн. поле и иссл. нелинейные эффекты в плазменном резонансе.
