Вскоре бросил учебу и в 1913 нелегально приехал в США. Во время 1-й мир. войны принимал участие в производстве воен.-уч. ф., после демобилизации переехал в Голливуд, работал монтажером и сценаристом у Т.Инса, Г.Кинга, М.Сеннета. Как реж. дебютировал в 1925 комедией «Семь грешников». Уже второй ф. «Семь арабских рыцарей» (1927) принес ему пр. «Оскар». Наиб, значит, ф. – «На Западном фронте без перемен» (1930, пр. «Оскар»), «Первая полоса» (1931), «Дождь» (1933), «О мышах и людях» (1939), «Северная звезда» (1943), «Прогулка под солнцем» (1945), «Триумфальная арка» (1948), «Отверженные» (1952), «Мятеж на «Баунти» (1962). Во время 2-й мир. войны был продюсером док. ф. «Наш русский фронт» (1941, реж. Й.Ивенс). В 1933–47 работал в т-ре. С сер. 1950-х гг. продюсер и реж. на ТВ.
