МАНДЕЛЬШТАМ Леон (Арье-Лейб) Иосифович (1819, Жагоры Шавельского у. Ковенской губ. – 1889, Петербург), общественный деятель. Брат В.О.Мандельштама. В 1844 окончил ист.-филос. ф-т Петерб. ун-та. В 1840 издал в Москве сб. стих. на рус. яз. В 1843 принимал участие в работе раввинской комиссии. Вернувшись в 1846 из Европы в Россию, был привлечен мин. нар. просвещения С.С.Уваровым к разработке проекта школьной еврейской реформы. М. был назначен ученым евреем при мин-ве, руководил осуществлением проекта Уварова и М.Лилиенталя. Выйдя в 1857 в отставку, неск. лет провел за границей. В 1849 М. издал руководство по изучению древнееврейского яз., в нач. 1850-х гг. – ТАНАХ с комментариями в переводе на нем. яз., в 1859–60 – еврейско-рус. и рус.-еврейский словари.
