Вел преподавательскую работу в вузах: Борисоглебском пед. ин-те, Ижевском гос. ун-те. Внес вклад в изучение рус. лирики 19 в., творчества Н.А.Некрасова, Е.А.Баратынского, М.Ю.Лермонтова, А.А.Фета и др., выявив типологию разл. поэтич. систем. Мн. внимания уделял проблеме автора, повествователя в лит-ре, выпустив по этой тематике 4 сб. (Воронеж, 1967–74).Соч.: Лирика и реализм. Иркутск, 1986.
