По возвращении в Москву в сер. 1950-х гг. познакомился с историком А.А.Зиминым, к-рый оказал значительное влияние на формирование науч. интересов К. С 1957 работал в Отделе рукописей и редких книг ГБЛ, с нач. 1960-х гг. – на кафедре истории СССР МГПИ. С 1988 – проф. Моск. историко-архивного ин-та.Автор ок. 150 науч. работ по истории России 15–16 вв.
