В 1931 окончил психотехнич. отд. пед. ф-та ЛГПИ им. А.И.Герцена. После окончания аспирантуры Моск. гос. ин-та психологии (1940) защитил канд. дис. по проблемам воли. С 1949 работал в НИИ общей и пед. психологии АПН, в 1968—83 зав. лаб. психофизиол. основ проф. деятельности, в 1983—85 зав. лаб. психодиагностики. Центр, место в науч. иссл. Г. занимает проблема индивидуально-психол. различий, проявляющихся, в частности, в проф. деятельности. Его кн. «Проф. пригодность и осн. свойства нервной системы» в 1971 удостоена первой пр. АПН СССР.
