ГЕРШМАН Мордехай (1888, Чернигов – 1940), кантор (лирич. тенор). Пел в ряде синагог, хоров до получения своей первой должности кантора хоральной синагоги Житомира, где служил 5 мес. в 1913. С 1913 гл. кантор в Вильне. Во время 1-й мир. войны был призван резервистом на воен. службу в рос. армию, но вскоре был освобожден от службы (благодаря пению) и смог продолжать исполнять обязанности кантора. С 1920 – в США, где стал кантором синагоги Бет-Эль в Бруклине (Нью-Йорк) и прослужил там 10 лет. Совершил мн. концертных турне по США, странам Европы, Э.-И. Обладал голосом мягкого тембра, специфич. канторской манерой исполнения. Сочетал влияние мелодич. элементов библейского речитатива и традиц. речитаций, характерных для чтения Талмуда.
