Absolvierte Petrograd. un-t (1916). Ab 1918 - in Simferopol in Tavrich. un-diejenigen. Stellvertreter Volkskommissar für Bildung auf der Krim. Sov. Sozialistisch. Rep. (1919). FRENKEL Yakov Ilyich (1894, Rostov-on-Don Region of the Don Cossack - 1952, Leningrad), theoretical physicist. Prof. (1920), bp. USSR Academy of Sciences (1929). Graduated from Petrograd. un-t (1916). From 1918 - in Simferopol in Tavrich. un-those. Deputy People's Commissar of Education Crimea. Sov. Socialist. Rep. (1919). From 1921 - in the Phys.-Tech. in-those and simultaneously. at the Polytechnic. in-those in Petrograd. In 1925-26 he was a fellow of the Rockefeller Foundation, worked in Germany, France, Great Britain. In 1930–31, the invited prof. Minnesota University (USA). Developed the quantum theory of contact phenomena in metals and the quantum theory of electrical conductivity of metals. After the creation in 1925 of quantum mechanics, he improved this theory by extending the ideas of wave-particle parallelism (dualism) to free electrons in metals. In condensed matter physics, the name of F. is associated with the present-day. picture of real crystals (defects according to Frenkel, motion of dislocations - Frenkel solitons), theory of strength, kinetic. theory of liquids. He substantiated the closeness between TV. and the liquid state of the substance. The theory of diffusion and self-diffusion developed by F. became the basis of powder metallurgy. F. introduced the concept of nuclear temperature, developed the electrocapillary theory of fission heavy. nuclei and predicted the effect of spontaneous fission. F. owned important results in geophysics (theory of the origin of terrestrial magnetism, theory of atmospheric electricity), astrophysics (theory of white dwarfs), biophysics (theory of muscular activity, relaxation theory of hearing).
