В 1920 создал самодеят. коллектив – 1-й моск. студенч. муз.-вок.-драм. кружок «Гаудеамус», играл в водевиле «Из-за мышонка», устраивал концерты в пользу неимущих студентов, приглашал для участия в них знаменитых актеров. В сер. 1920-х гг. организовал лекции наркома просвещения А.В.Луначарского, доходы от к-рых шли в фонд молодых дарований. В 1925–28 жил в Грузии, участвовал в организации гастролей МХАТа и Т-ра им. Вс.Мейерхольда в Тифлисе. В 1930-х гг. администратор в т-рах Москвы. С 1936 дир. Дома актера в Москве, подготовил его открытие (февр. 1937) и бессменно руководил им. Автор мемуаров «В нашем доме» (М., 1973; 2-е изд. М., 1980). Засл. работник культуры РСФСР (1967).Дочь Э. – Маргарита (р. 1933, Москва – 2009, там же), редактор телевизионных программ, театральный администратор.
