Опубликовал неск. книг очерков: «Только мельком» (1928), «Дорога и люди. Очерк Турксиба» (1931) и др. Как критик начал выступать с кон. 1930-х гг. Автор моногр. об Артеме Веселом (1960), Алексее Толстом (1961), лит. мемуаров «Ушедшие годы» (М., 1970, 2-е изд.), в к-рые включены восп. о М.Горьком, В.П.Кине (муж Ц.И.Кин), В.В.Маяковском, Ю.К.Олеше и др. Выпустил неск. сборников статей и очерков, а также ист.-докум. пов. «Лейтенант Шмидт» (М., 1960).
