В 18 лет переехал в Пруссию, где продолжил обучение под рук. раввина И.Липкина (Салантера). В 1892–96 Б. был раввином в Бостоне (куда он отправился после высылки из Германии), а затем преподавателем семит, языков в Броунском ун-те. В 1898 Б. занял в Нью-Йорке пост инспектора по образованию.
