В 1930-х гг. — районный центр Еврейской АО.В 1939 в Б. проживало 346 евреев.В нач. 1930-х гг. в р-не Б. велась добыча угля, действовали леспромхоз, лесохим. и смолокуренный з-ды. В 1933 на основе организ. в 1928 «Бирского опытного поля» создан Биробиджанский н.-и. комплексный ин-т сел. х-ва ВАСХНИЛ. В сер. 1930-х гг. резко возрос приток переселенцев. Две трети жителей занимались кустарно-промысловой деятельностью, на долю р-на приходилось 80% от общего объема заготовки древесины по Еврейской АО. В 1934 была создана многопрофильная артель «Бирский труженик», в 1935 артель «Наер штерн» («Новая звезда»), объединившая сапожников и портных.
