- БЕТТАН Израиль (1889, Ковно – 1957, США), гебраист. Учился в иешиве в Слободке. С 1907 в США. Служил воен. раввином во время 1-й мир. войны. В 1922 был назначен проф. в Хибру Юнион колледж. Б. – автор многочисл. науч. и попул. работ в обл. мидрашской лит-ры, литургии, толкования евр. проповедников и по разл. аспектам реформирования иудаизма. Ему принадлежат также кн.: «Изучение евр. проповедников» (1939) и «Пять свитков» (1950). Принимал активное участие в работе конф. амер. реформистских раввинов, как чл. ее Литургич. к-та был одним из созд. реформированного молитвенника.
