После демобилизации (1946) преподавал историю в Архангельском пед. ин-те, в 1947–50 учился в аспирантуре МГУ. В 1950–54 работал в системе АН СССР консультантом по проблемам истории, с 1954 в Ин-те истории АН СССР (с 1968 в Ин-те истории СССР АН СССР). С 1954 зам. ответств. секр., в 1958–61 ответств. секр. сб-ка «Ист. записки». Автор работ по истории гос. строя, внутр. политики и обществ.-полит, борьбы в России в нач. 20 в. Статьи А. «О нек-рых вопросах рев. ситуации» («Вопросы истории КПСС», 1966, № 5) и «Рус. абсолютизм и его роль в утверждении капитализма в России» («История СССР», 1968, № 2) дали начало оживленным науч. дискуссиям.
