Изучал фотохимию хлорофилла в растениях и в бесклеточной системе, химизм восстановления углекислого газа хлоропластами. Открыл процесс фотосинтетич. фосфорилирования (1954) и установил, что все необходимые для фотосинтеза ферменты сосредоточены в хлоропластах. Иссл. роль ферредоксина в энергетич. реакциях фотосинтеза. Показал, что молибден и ванадий – необходимые микроэлементы для жизнедеятельности зеленых растений. През. Амер. об-ва физиологов растений (1952—53), чл. Амер. академии иск-в и наук (1962). Чл. Нац.
