После освобождения получил франц. орден за мужество. Писать начал вскоре после войны, опубликовав во Франции неск. ром.: «Как если бы это закончилось» (1946), «Опыт» (1951), «Та же река» (1954), «Псевдонимы» (1957) и «Ничей след» (1963). Ром. «Рука на губах» написан им в соавт. с Т.Сандра. Стиль произв. А. отличается музыкальностью и ритмизованностью. Их осн. тема – неудача, обусловленная несчастливыми обстоятельствами, к-рые автор считает универсальными. Только в автобиограф. ром. «Как если бы это закончилось» эта тема окрашена евр. колоритом.
