בהסכמה הרשומה בראש הספר מצויין כי יצחק סטנוב הציג את כתב היד כספר ישן שהוא מצא אותו, אבל לדעת המסכימים יתכן שהוא עצמו כתב זאת. בהקדמה לספר מספר יוסף לוצטו כי סטנוב מצא את הספר בספרייה, וכי הוא פרסם אותו בלוויית הביאור שלו: "... ראו ראינו מעשה אצבעותיך ספר אסף וביאורו אשר כוננת, מושב אלוהים ישבת בבית עקד הספרים ושם מצאתיו...". בפרק א' פס' א' של הספר הוא מציין את המקור המדוייק: "בן ברכיהו מן המשוררים אשר בלוים". ראו גם ורסס תש"ן, 170; פלאי 1988, 84.

בהקדמת המחבר בספר משלי אגור: בעקבות משלי שלמה לאפרים דומורצקי (ורשה, 1910), טוען דומורצקי כי הוא הולך בדרכו של יצחק סטנוב ב משלי אסף , אך משליו כתובים בסגנון יפה מזה של משלי אסף .
