בלשון המחבר בהקדמתו, Die Tendenz dieses Theils ist von doppelter Art: Erstens, die Schüler in der hebräischen Sprache so weit zu bringen, daß sie etwas aus derselben in ihren Muttersprache übersetzen können. Zweitens, sie mit den gutten Sitten und religiös- moralischen Pflichten bekannt zu machen. פיליפסון מדגיש כי מטרתו בספר זה היא להקנות <ins>ידע סביל</ins> של השפה העברית - יכולת הבנה, או בדבריו יכולת תרגום מאותה שפה, welches doch der Hauptzweck einer nicht lebendigen Sprache ist. בהתאם לכך, סיפורים קצרים (סיפורי התנ"ך, ספורים מן המסורת היהודית) שפיליפסון מביא, מלווים בתרגומי מילים ומשפטים לגרמנית. על מנת לא להרתיע תלמידים מלימוד השפה, בכרך זה הוא נמנע מלהכביד עליו יתר על המידה בכללים וחוקים. אותם, הוא מציין, ירכז בחלק השלישי של הספר (שלא ראה אור מעולם). הספר כולל, בין היתר, לוחות להטיית פעלים. סיפורי התנ"ך מובאים בקצרה (בעברית, עם תרגום מילים ומשפטים לגרמנית), ולאחר כל סיפור וסיפור ישנו "מוסר השכל", הכתוב בגרמנית.- Total number of editions
